cultural DIVERSITY - looking to connect!
I'm looking to connect with classrooms for an upcoming blog unit with my 2nd & 3rd grade technology classes. In short, I'm hoping to share in learning with peers from around the world in hopes this will motivate my kiddos to write about authentic topics of passion and culture. I'd love to use both KidBlog & Skype Classroom as the tools for connecting with classrooms around the world. I've outlined the unit with essential questions, student objectives, and blogging ideas below.
Overarching Driving Question of Jameson:
What does it mean to be part of a community?
Essential Questions:
What is culture?
What is cultural diversity?
What is the importance of understanding cultural diversity?
What qualities make cultures unique and different?
How does culture influence being part of a community?
Student Objectives:
ISTE-S
Communication & Collaboration
a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media.
b. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of digital environments and media.
c. Develop cultural and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures.
Research & Information Fluency
c. Locate, organize, analyze, synthesize, and ethically use information.
Digital Citizenship
c. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports learning and productivity.
Common Core
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.7 Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.6 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.SL.5 Make strategic use of digital media and visual displays of data to express information and enhance understanding of presentations.
Student Activities:
Ours students could...
- Research their family traditions by interviewing a relative and sharing on blog, skyping with relatives, etc. Blog about their findings.
- Research, with help of Librarian, about their own culture, and share that information on blog. Skype to read a book they found with their ePal, write a blog of the book, and critique each other's findings.
- Present about their culture & traditions using a Google Presentation via Skype or sharing on their blog.
- Answer prompts of cultural questions.
- Have our kids post and watch videos of our local cultures followed by discussions through blog commenting.
- Share some of the community building ideas of our schools (i.e. listen to one of our podcasts, watch one of PBIS homegrown videos, etc.)
- The possibilities are endless!
These are just a few ideas and suggestions. If these ideas are of interest and you'd like to collaborate with me on this unit, please email me at [email protected] or @MisterCMaine on Twitter, and lets develop the unit together! Thanks!
