digital citizenship week - 10/21-10/25, 2013"Stay Safe. Think First. Stay Balanced." Some of you may heard of Digital Citizenship (#DigCit). For those of you who have, or have not, here is your chance to get involved! In short, digital citizenship is teaching our kids to be honest, safe, respectful, and responsible while online. Many of our tools we use at Jameson are Web 2.0 Tools, meaning they are collaborative and interactive. Students will find themselves communicating with each other using these tools, and they'll need to learn how to do this the right way. To spark #digcit awareness, the Jameson School community will be participating in "Digital Citizenship Week," October 21-25, in partnership with the awesome folks at Common Sense Media. It will all kick off at Jameson's monday morning assembly with the "Pause and Think Online" (see below) song and dance. Throughout the week, students will be working on various activities to become responsible online citizens. Both Mrs. Orlando and myself have teamed up to build a Jameson School #DigCit Curriculum Map to be taught throughout the year with monthly themes. This month, K & 1st grade will work on "going places safely" while 2nd & 3rd graders will focus on "keeping it private." I'll be introducing the AWESOME Web 2.0 tool called "Digital Passport" to both 2nd & 3rd Graders in the technology lab. They'll start their journey by learning how to protect their private information and make safe choices online.
Our kids are beginning to spend a lot of time online. At Jameson, we advocate for our students to balance their screen time, along with protecting private information, respecting themselves and others, staying safe online, and standing up to bullying. Click on the "All Digital Citizens" picture above and download the poster to hang by your child's technology work area! :) How can parents get involved?1) Download the Digital Passport Student Handbook and work with your kiddos at home! We will be covering the "Privacy" module first, so please just cover those pages in the handbook to start.
2) Check out the "Family Tip Sheet" from Common Sense Media. Read them over and discuss expected behaviors with your kids! 3) Check out the "Family Media Agreement" from Common Sense Media. This will help you and your child create boundaries of technology usage that are fair and accepted by both parties. Stay Safe. Think First. Stay Balanced. 4) Sign Up for a FREE Webinar to Educate Yourself: • 21st Century Classroom Management: Edmodo for Digital Citizenship • Wed, Oct. 23, 4-5 p.m. PDT • (Co-hosted with Edmodo) Click here to register • Empowering Students to Be Digital Citizens • Thurs, Oct. 24, 1-2 p.m. PDT • (Hosted on EdWeb) Click here to register • Teaching Copyright and Fair Use to the Remix Generation • Wed, Nov. 13, 1-2 p.m. PDT • (Hosted on EdWeb) Click here to register 5) Check out the Jameson School Facebook page for the "Tip of the Day" (Oct. 21-25) from Mr. Flaherty! More to come next week! Yours in Education, Mr. C (aka Billy) room 8 k-stars math - 1st trimester1st trimester at a glance... We've worked hard to build our routines and procedures so our kiddos can start to work independently, in partners, and in groups. K math will really focus on two major things: 1) Developing a strong number sense. We want our kids to understand numbers in many ways such as - number identification, number order, finding missing numbers, fewer or more numbers, etc. Developing a strong sense of numbers will allow our kids to 2) become problem solvers, critical thinkers, and analyzers. Our students learn to contrast and compare, patterns and their functions, develop ideas about sorting and classifying, counting, representing, conducting a data investigation, and using data to solve a problem.
