unit 2 - counting & comparing
We're working hard on our "counting & comparing" unit in kindergarten math! During this unit, students will develop strategies and conceptual understanding of counting & quantity, linear measurement, & whole number operations. The K team is always looking for ways to make home-school connections so you can do your best to be a math role model at home. Moving forward, we'll kick each unit off by writing a blog that details the mathematical emphasis of each unit & various games (printable PDF's, online, & iPad) for you to play at home with your child. We hope this will help you understanding the concepts we teach, how we deliver the instruction, and give you some fun math games to play at home. If you show a passion for teaching & learning, it will go a long way to influence your child to share in that passion! It may be a good idea to put aside time for a special "game night" where you spend 10-15 minutes playing a game of their choice. We hope this is helpful. If you have questions, please leave them in the comment section below and we'll be sure to answer them as quick as possible. Thanks for sharing in our learning! :)

5 mathematical emphases:1. Counting & Quantity - Developing strategies for accurately counting a set of objects by ones. Math Focus Points: - Developing strategies for accurately counting & keeping track of quantities up to 12. - Connecting number words, numerals, & quantities - Developing visual images for quantities up to 6 - Counting backwards 2. Counting & Quantity - Developing the idea of equivalence. Math Focus Points: - Creating an equivalent set - Considering whether order matters when you count 3. Linear Measurement - Understanding Length. Math Focus Points: - Directly comparing two objects to determine which is longer - Sorting objects into two categories according to length - Developing language to describe and compare lengths (long, longer than, shorter than, the same, equal to) 4. Counting & Quantity - Developing an understanding of the magnitude & position of numbers. Math Focus Points: - Comparing two (or more) quantities to determine which is more - Developing language for comparing quantities (more, greater, less, fewer, most, least, fewest, same, and equal to) - Ordering quantities from least to most 5. Whole Number Operations - Using manipulatives, drawings, tools, & notation to show strategies & solutions. Math Focus Points: - Represent quantities with pictures, numbers, objects, and/or words - Using numerals to represent quantities - Using a Ten-Frame to develop visual images of quantities up to 10 | activities & games: |
